Issue 9. Hindrances to the Spiritual Life
In this issue of The New Cruse we are dealing with the various hindrances we face in moving forward in the spiritual life. These hindrances will be faced by all true believers at some point along the way. Who would dare to doubt that the Christian life will encounter many things which if not watched against will sidetrack, hinder, or worse still shipwreck. Attitudes, actions, teachings and movements may either be used for the furtherance of spiritual progress or its hindrance.
In recent decades some of the greatest hindrances to true spirituallity have come from preachers within the church. We have great need to be awake, alert and watchful against any hindrance or enemy to the progress of a spiritual walk within the heart. The sleepy, slothful, careless Christian is destined to go headlong into activities which destroy spirituallity.
The people of God have always faced hindrances. Joseph faced pits and prisons. Job faced poverty, illness and... Joshua faced the walls of Jericho. Hannah faced the reproach of barreness. Mary faced the reproach of pregnancy. Paul faced prisons, riots and ridicule. All of these saints could have been hindered in spiritual progress by the walls of opposition and pits of captivity that confronted them, but instead by God's grace they arose and went forth. All of these barriers, hindrances and obstacles worked rather for their good and furtherance in their spiritual pilgrimage.
